Cats in 2011 NFL Combine

In keeping with the spirit of this week's NFL Combine is a "Very Early Look" at CATS who will be available for next years (2011) NFL Draft.

De Quin Evans, is the Senior DE who transferred from Harbor Junior College in California to UK and started from Day 1 at the RDE position. DeQuin is a 6 ft 3 in 260 lb DE who led the CATS in sacks, (with 6 for 40 yards), and tied Corey Peters in tackles for loss (12.5 for 48 yds). His 38 Total Tackles were 7th on the team. At times, DeQuin got sucked in on play action, but with another year of experience and getting used to the speed of the game (he has only played for 4 yrs), he will be much better his Senior Year.

Evans' greatest attributes are his speed, motor, and intensity. If, he can increase his stats from the '09 season (which he should), and add about 20 lb of body mass, by increasing his strength, without losing any speed, he might get a look at about Round #5 or so. He is best suited for a 4-3 defense, due to his frame.

  1. A point should be made about Dequin Evans. Basically, Evans started in 2009 because Jeremy Jarmon was busted by the NCAA. If Jarmon had been eligible last fall, Evans might or might not have started....but I think his path would have been a lot tougher.

And I'm not suggesting Dequin isn't a good player. Dequin has a nice set of athletic tools, and I believe he will have a productive senior season in 2010. But despite his six sacks, I believe after watching a lot of game film that he did not play very well last fall. The sacks came from natural athletic ability. But Dequin took himself out of a lot of plays with poor technique and by getting sucked-in on ball fakes and play-action. And if you look hard at the film, he could have been in on a lot more plays.

Now Dequin is the senior in UK's DE rotation, so big things will be expected from him next fall. Still, it's worth pointing out that UK's DE rotation will be deeper and better in 2010. I realize a lot of fans don't think so yet, but I think UK's other DEs will be dramatically better this time around. If Dequin continues to get sucked-in by play-action, I believe he could see the bench more than he did in 2009. But OTOH, if he makes the normal progression that JUCO transfers tend to make as D-1 seniors, he could have a very productive season next fall.
