2010 Recruiting Rewind- Mychal Bailey

Mychal Bailey (S) was initially expected to enroll in January based on reports, however will enroll this spring or summer instead. Bailey signed with UK out of high school, but had to attend Junior College for academic reasons. Bailey is another La Grange, GA pipeline product who has a reputation of being a big hitter on defense. Joker Phillips stated Bailey could see action returning kick offs as well. Look to see him make an impact on special teams and add speed to the secondary. Bailey received some big accolades coming out of Junior College (All-American). In my opinion, way underrated as a two-star recruit.

  1. Another nice post. I agree with you about Mychal Bailey.

As we know, star ratings are a device for selling premium subscriptions. They are based on an internet rating service editor's cursory review of a prospect's five-minute highlight film and his internet search of other ratings. Sometimes they are based on less than that. These "star ratings" often get "revised" by the rating service as the kid picks up scholarship offers from schools whose fans subscribe to the ratings service. Accordingly, they mean nothing. This is why many four-star prospects fail, and many one- and two-star prospects become stars. If class ratings meant anything, UK could not have beaten Georgia and Auburn on the road in 2009. Jacob Tamme could not have been an All American in 2007. Trevard Lindley could not have been one of th SEC's best football players in 2007 and 2008, and Randall Cobb would not be one of the SEC's best football players now.

In contrast, D-1 coaching staffs watch at least several games in person over a two-year period, break down film, talk with the kid's HS coaches, and meet the kid and his family before a scholarship is offered.

Mychal Bailey was an all-state player at Lagrange HS. He signed with UK in 2007. But as you pointed out, he could not enroll at UK because of academic shortcomings. So Mychal attended SW Mississippi Community College, where he received citation as a JUCO All American safety. Mychal signed with UK again in the recently-completed class and will try to enroll next August. This is not a sure thing. Mychal has not yet been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse, and we probably won't know until July if he can enroll at UK.

If he makes it to Lexington, Mychal will be the latest in a long line of Grangers to play at UK. Speed, pursuit, and solid tackling skills are the strong suits of his defensive game. As you said, he is fast enough to return kickoffs, and could be a special teams contributor. The question for 2010 is whether missing spring drills will take Mychal out of the competition for a starting safety assignment next fall. This remains to be seen.

  3. Next year, it will be him, Winston Guy, Dakotah Tyler, and Glen Faulkner fighting for the safety positions (presumably!)

At worst, he is a great depth, and special teams player for UK (barring injury, and assuming that he makes it on campus)
