The Bleacher Report has an article on Braxton Miller and his importance to Ohio State. Miller is a program changer and all of the major programs are recruiting him. He did visit UK last year for a football game. Hopefully, Joker Phillips, Randy Sanders and Tee Martin can make a run at Miller. UK wants to to sign one QB in the 2011 class and Miller is at the top of every team's recruiting board.

Aaron, your speculation concerning Braxton Miller brings up a very interesting recruiting issue for 2011.
ReplyDeleteLast month, UK signed Tyler Brause. I have a lot of respect for Brause as a D-1 prospect, but I think Brause has a long and unpredictable path ahead. He will redshirt for sure in 2010, and it is far from clear whether he will stay at QB or move to another position eventually.
Moreover, UK's roster is certainly not overpopulated with QBs. Hartline will graduate after the 2010 season, leaving behind Newton, Mossakowski, and Brause. We don't know for sure whether someone might transfer at some point.
So everyone knows Joker will sign a QB in 2011. Braxton Miller will obviously be at the top of that list, and it is somewhat encouraging that Miller has already visited Lexington. But let's be realistic. Miller is probably an Ohio State lean, and he already has more than 10 D-1 scholarship offers. I hope UK signs Miller. But if that doesn't happen, then who?
Joker has a scholarship offer on the table to Shamir Jeffery, and it is believed that Jeffery likes UK and Auburn primarily because both are willing to give him a look as a QB. But most schools project Jeffrey as a WR. Would Jeffery remain a QB as a Cat....or would he move to WR (obviously another "need" position)?
Joker is talking with a long list of other QB prospects. With that said, the only four QB prospects with current UK scholarship offers are Miller, Jeffrey, Justin Worley, and DaMarcus Smith. Smith is a UL verbal and, at 6'0" 175#, I don't think he fits as a QB in UK's offense even if he changes his mind. And I believe Smith will probably stick with UL.
That leaves Worley. Worley plays for Northwestern HS, a school Joker has recruited in the past. He is a heck of a prospect, with a big frame and a strong arm. Worley already has scholarship offers from Florida, LSU, and Tennessee and, again, you wonder whether Joker can actually sign him over those competitors. That would be great, but what happens if he can't?
There are three interesting instate QB prospects this year....Connor Hempel, Kal Prince, and Neal Pawset. Two more are in Cincinnati (Joker's new-found recruiting priority)....Patrick Coyne and Andrew Kummer. None of those five hold UK scholarship offers. But Coyne has already visited Lexington. Prince is the son of a former UK player, and it is known that Joker has been talking with his father about a possible scholarship offer next fall.
UK will sign a QB in 2011, and it will be very interesting to see how Joker fills this QB scholarship. Obviously, a more successful passing game in 2010 would help QB recruitment substantially.
