Position battles to watch on Saturday

(QB) Hartline, Newton and Mossakowski- Most figure Hartline is leading with Newton a close second. Looks like Moss will be third string this fall. If Hartline is the guy, would Newton redshirt?

(RB) Russell, George and Williams- Most felt Russell would back up Locke, however George is making a big push for the back up role. Williams received a few carries last year, but if everyone stays healthy it looks like he will be buried on the depth chart.

(WR) McCaskill, Adams, Fields, Roark and Boyd- these five are really battling to crack the rotation. Each of these players need a big spring game and continue to work hard this summer or they are looking at very little playing time, except for special teams.

(TE) Melillo, Wallace, Aumiller and Kendrick- Each of these players do different things well, but it sounds like Aumiller has the most potential. All three are in the mix to see action this fall and need to showcase their abilities in the spring game.

(OL) Burden, Murphy and Durham- Most everyone pegged Murphy and Durham as the starters this spring, but Chandler Burden has impressed the staff this spring and really pushing to earn the starting left tackle job.

(DT) Cobble, McCord and Crawford- Many felt the starting spot opposite Ricky Lumpkin was Cobble’s to lose this spring. However, Mark Crawford has received serious recognition from the staff and could be one of the biggest surprises. Don’t count out the McCord who is a senior.

(DE) Henderson, Johnson, Ukwu and Ligon- As we know, DeQuin Evans will be one starter and most figure Taylor Wyndham to be the other starter, but I wouldn’t count out any of the young guys just yet. All four of the names mentioned above have had great springs and will continue to compete this fall.

(MLB) Sneed and Huzzie- Chuck Smith has stated Sneed has more experience and understands the system better, but Huzzie is more athletic. Does the staff go with consistency or ability?

(SLB) Dufrene and Wilson- This position battle is similar to the one above. The linebackers really need to step up and play well to earn more reps this fall.

(CB) Neloms and Rice- Who will step up and replace Trevard Lindley? Randall Burden and Paul Warford are the likely starters heading into the fall. Both Neloms and Rice have had solid springs and should see a lot of action this fall.

(FS) Walker, Tyler and Gibbs- The staff seems a little frustrated with Winston Guy as he is not playing to their expectation. Both Tyler and Gibbs are fast and competing. With UK using the Nickel Package so frequent on 3rd down and wanting to play more three man fronts, look for one of these three to be on the field this fall with Guy.

  1. It is pretty obvious from your picture that Hartline is about four steps ahead of Newton with Moss about the same behind Newton. But Moss could be taking longer strides since he hasn't entered the blocks yet.

    LOL
