New offer for Dawson

Per Rob Gidel, Lamar Dawson has received an offer from Michigan. Dawson is really close to UK's coaching staff and most feel he is the Cats to lose at this point. Based on my interviews, Dawson isn't in a hurry to make a decision and will likely take his visits next fall.

  1. Aaron, nice writeup on Lamar Dawson. IMO Dawson has the highest D-1 upside of any prospect in the Commonwealth's 2011 class. He is a prototypical MLB prospect, and perhaps the best produced in the Commonwealth since Joe Federspiel. Moreover, the fit for UK is compelling. In its last two graduating classes, UK has lost Braxton Kelley, Johnny Williams, Sam Maxwell, Micah Johnson, and Mikhail Mabry. Joker cannot afford to miss on an elite instate LB prospect like Dawson.

Joker has already added three outstanding early verbal commitments (Davis, Miller, Faulkner) for his 2011 class. However, I think Dawson is the most important prospect on Joker's 2011 recruiting board.

Because UK Recruiting Coordinator Chuck Smith is a friend of Dawson's family, the conventional wisdom suggests Dawson is a UK-lean. However, I agree with you that Dawson will be difficult to sign. Lamar will take all of his visits, and he will not commit until late in the process. By then, he will have a long list of D-1 offers. I think Lamar is receptive to becoming a Cat, but I don't believe he is presently a "lean". This will be a tough sell because every top program in the region will be coming after Lamar's commitment. Joker will have to be very convincing in order to sign Lamar, and I'm not sure how this one will work out.

  2. I believe Kentucky HAS to land Dawson. Players like him don't come out of Kentucky every year.

  3. What are the measurables on this guy? Height, weight, speed? I did not think he had the frame to be a middle LB.

  4. 6'2" and 230lbs. Runs a 4.5-4.6 forty. Kid has a motor that won't quit. He is a big time prospect and very good kid. He will make a great addition to any program he attends. More and more schools are getting involved every week. Joker has his hands full with this one.
