Since our last update, the Cats received a verbal from Theltus Cobbins who has put up some impressive numbers in Louisiana. It appears the Cats got in on him early and found another great athlete. While Cobbins should play quarterback at UK, he has the ability to play other positions as well. Nothing has changed with Shamier Jeffery’s recruitment other than Auburn signed a top rated quarterback which could affect their chances in landing his commitment. Most people still feel Braxton Miller is Ohio State’s to lose. CJ Uzomah is likely staying in Georgia and Justin Worley appears to be leaning towards Rocky Top. DaMarcus Smith is still committed to Louisville, but I’m hearing the Cats are still recruiting him too. It wouldn’t surprise me to see in-state players Conner Hempel, Neal Pawsat or Kal Prince end up at UK. All three have excellent grades and could possibly receive a preferred walk-on opportunity which could save the program a scholarship. All three of the in-state players mentioned will attend various camps at UK over the summer. Another name to remember is Mike Wegzyn from Tennessee. He holds several offers mid-major offers and bigger ones should follow. He recently attended two camps in Lexington.
Most likely to be a Cat
I still feel Shamier Jeffery is the most likely to pick UK followed by either Hempel, Prince, Pawsat or Wegzyn. With the Cats having commitments from Cobbins and Max Smith, they can afford to be picky at this point.
Would love to go ahead and get Jeffery on board and sort his position out later. We've been his leader, now need to close on him.

UK uses a lot of funds to operate that come from Kentucky State tax payers
As a Kentucky State tax payer why should any player from out of state get a free ride while a Kentucky player pays
Kal, Neal or Conner may end up at UK or they may not. One could get an offer or none. I'm not suggesting in-state players come to UK as walk on's to give a free ride to an out of state player.
ReplyDeleteAs someone who played in college I understand the importance of good grades and the value of not spending a football scholarship if a player can receive academic support. Many players who have ability walk on at major programs (John Conner / Cameron Mills).
The purpose wasn't to argue in-state versus out of state. It's entirely up the the staff to determine who gets a scholarship offer and who doesn't. I'm just pointing out that recruiters look for players who have good grades and if someone has great grades, it can make the staff's job a easier in recruiting them. Consideirng UK's 2011 class may be smaller than usual, a player may need to consider a preferred walk-on opportunity if they truly want to attend UK and play football.
Regardless, I don't see UK taking any more QB's, unless Jeffery wants to commit and I still think he ultimately ends up at WR. Cobbins and Smith present two talented QB's that can bring different styles to the table. We are probably close to half full with this class already with too many other needs that still need to be filled.
