UK Predicted at #5

The Bleacherreport has put out a preliminary preseason prediction for the SEC. Again, they have predicted that UK will finish #5 in the SEC East. I bet you can guess who is predicted to finish #6!!

  1. I have followed UK football for a long time and we will always be predicted to finish #5 and I don't blame anyone for that. However, with the talent and coaches we have assembled we will continue to upset the likes of LSU, Georgia and Auburn. We will get Tennessee this year along with South Carolina. The other schools land more talented players (no one can argue that)so they should be predicted to finish higher.

  2. The media will not magically start projecting UK as an upper tier SEC football program. That level of respect must be earned. In recent years, UK's football program has accomplished some interesting milestones, such as being one of only four SEC programs to be invited to four-straight bowl games. For a brief time in 2007, the Cats appeared in national top ten polls. In 2009, the Cats had an opportunity to shake up the SEC East Division pecking order if they could have won their overtime game against Tennessee.

But when the rubber hits the road, the Cats generally finish 5th or 6th in the SEC East Division. That's why the media expects it to happen again.

OTOH, many UK fans understand that the gap has been narrowed. Rick Brooks did a great job of restocking UK's roster and increasing overall team speed. Although the Cats have been unable to break their long losing streaks to Florida, South Carolina, and Tennessee, the games against the Vols and Gamecocks have gotten a lot more competitive. And last season, UK beat Auburn for the first time since 1966.

I think most of us recognize that the Cats are on the right track. Mitch Barnhart has overseen a smooth transition from Brooks to Joker. The coaching staff has been upgraded. Joker is intensifying UK's practices and ramping up the recruiting program. With SEC stars like Randall Cobb, Derrick Locke, and Stuart Hines returning, the Cats have an opportunity to climb the SEC East Division pecking order in 2010. But until the Cats actually get the job done, the mainstream media will not go out on a limb and predict it. And, frankly, it's sometimes easier to be in the underdog role anyway.

  3. Enjoy 6th place, because that's where you're going to be.
