Why Joker was the right choice

In my opinion, this is why Joker Phillips was the right man for the job. He's passionate and loyal. He has an opportunity to build something special at Kentucky. Even if Joker Phillips is extremely successful at UK, I can't see him leaving. Why? He Bleeds Blue!

  1. Joker is a native Kentuckian. That is what makes him special. He understands how average Kentuckians feel about the program and he loves the state just like we do. I am proud he is the coach. He will do good.
That said, I hope the 1 percent of ignorant Kentucky fans either shut up, or become fans of another program. I am tired of ignorant fans making stupid comments about the program, like we saw just 2 weeks ago regarding the basketball loss at USC. I hope you all merely go away. Kentucky fans of both sports do not need you!

  2. Congratulations for pulling out this clip of Joker from the "coach in waiting" press conference. You are exactly right. Mitch promoted the right guy, and this clip shows some of the reasons why.

Joker bleeds blue like we do. I watched Joker play at UK. I have watched his coaching career. He has learned the management aspect of the game well from Holtz and Brooks. People like to criticize Joker's tactical acumen. But the truest measure of his tactical coaching skill was the performance of UK's 2007 offensive unit. In 2008 and 2009, Joker was forced by graduations, injuries, and other factors to coach innovatively and navigate around roster shortcomings. I know a lot of fair weather fans (and one wannabe coach serving as a moderator on another website) don't understand that, and won't be convinced no matter what anyone says to educate them. But it's true. Those same fans will be right back on Joker's bandwagon when Joker succeeds.

The clip shows that Joker loves UK, and always has. I get this, because I grew up in Kentucky with the same feelings of reverence for our state university that Joker expresses in the clip. Like Joker, I am very proud of my UK diploma, and will always be proud to be a UK alumnus.

And here's the thing. When Joker succeeds, he will stay at UK and keep building. Others would use success at UK as a negotiating leverage for another coaching position, but Joker won't do that. Watch how fast Charlie Strong bolts Louisville if he is successful there.
