This is one of the less publicized videos regarding the 2010 UK recruiting class. Coach Smith gives some insight into the recruiting process.

  1. As this clip illustrates, Chuck Smith is a very articulate man with energy and leadership ability. It isn't difficult to see why he is UK's Recruiting Coordinator.

It is insightful to understand Chuck's background. Chuck played LB at UK, then made his early coaching reputation as head football coach at Boyle County HS where his teams annually played deep into the state postseason playoffs.

But when you compare Chuck as a recruiter to Joker Phillips, there are some interesting differences. Joker is a former NFL player. In the last 15 years, Joker coached at South Carolina and Notre Dame. So it isn't difficult to see why Joker can pull kids out of South Carolina and Georgia and convince them to play at UK. This explains how Joker has been able to recruit many of UK's best players over the last decade.

In contrast, Chuck had no recruiting network outside the Commonwealth when he came to UK. Chuck has developed his own network of recruiting contacts on the job. Nonetheless, Chuck recruited Alex Smith, Tyler Brause, and Teven Eatmon out of Ohio this year. He recruited Mike Douglas out of Florida. Last year Chuck signed Morgan Newton and Dakotah Tyler out of the Indianapolis area.

I consider Chuck a major overachiever.
