ESPN's Chris Low writes about Rich Brooks and the Cats knocking down barriers. There is one final barrier that UK needs to break and it's Tennessee. A win over Tennessee is huge for the UK football program. Beating the Vols will ensure UK finishes second in the SEC East and put the Cats in a January Bowl game. Now, stop and think about that for a minute. Before the season, did you pick UK to finish second on the SEC East? Did you pick them to play in a January Bowl?
How motivated do you think Randall Cobb will be for Saturday's game? I believe Cobb will not allow UK to lose to Tennessee. Cobb is the spark plug for UK, he motivates and leads by example. I can't wait to see him on Saturday. Considering he was over looked by Tennessee, I expect he will play with a little more motivation. Someone told me, Randall Cobb is to Tennessee as Chris Lofton was to Kentucky.
Unsung players are driving an amazing year for UK Football. Randall Cobb, Derrick Locke and Morgan Newton have received most of the attention this season. However, players like Winston Guy, Randall Burden, Danny Trevathan and Chris Matthews have made huge plays. Just because Matthews hasn't made a huge impact receiving, he has made a huge impact blocking on the outside. Danny Trevathan has played with a cast for must of the season and will be solid for the next two years. Randall Burden went from part time to full time when Trevard Lindley was injured. This season has been about the entire football team, which could land Rich Brooks the SEC Coach of Year honor after the season.
Chuck Smith gives Larry Vaught some insight on the linebacker position for 2010. UK will be losing Micah Johnson and Sam Maxwell after this year as both are seniors. Smith feels that Ronnie Sneed could be the breakout player next year like Maxwell was this year. Smith also expects big things from Qua Huzzie and Ridge Wilson next season.
UK missed on another recruit for 2010 yesterday when tight end Alex Smith picked North Carolina over Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin. Many felt UK had a good shot to land Smith, but in the end, the tight end chose the Tarheels.
UK is still in the mix with at least 12 solid recruits for 2010. However, the Cats currently have 17 commits for 2010 and the coaching staff expects to sign 22 players. There isn't a lot of room left in this class and my biggest concern is the lack of offensive and defensive line players left. The coaching staff is still hopeful that Donte Rumph (DE) will enroll in January, but at this point there are no guarantees. Rumph is friends with current UK recruit and Gamecock verbal Eric Mack (OL). Mack will be visiting UK and says the Cats are in the mix, but in the end I don't see Mack committing to the Cats. Based on comments from people I have spoken to in South Carolina, location is huge for Mack. Also, the staff is making a hard push for Jared Morse (DT) who is currently committed to Vanderbilt and the recruit is planning on visiting UK the first part of December.
