Chandler Burden's move to the offensive line has been anticipated for several months. The staff has a decision to make. Burden still has a redshirt option left. Realistically, he isn't a candidate to start in September, but he could become an important back-up to Billy Joe Murphy at LT. Or he could redshirt in 2010 to facilitate the positional move, then play a more important OL role in 2011 and 2012.
ReplyDeleteI have listened to Joker's remarks carefully, and I don't think he is saying that he will work Anthony Kendrick or Ryan Wallace at FB. Generally, you don't play a 6'5" guy at FB. You want a more leveraged guy with a lower center of gravity and a quicker first step as the lead blocker. What Joker said was that FB and TE are "more or less interchangeable" in the running game. Here's what he means. The key to a successful running game is blocking schemes. You can put a lead blocker (like John Connor, for instance) in front of your RB in the I-formation. Or you can use a two-TE offensive set and get an extra blocker on an opposing LB that way. Joker knows UK cannot replace Jon Connor, and that Moncell Allen is not that type of FB. That's why he is looking at the two-TE sets. But he is not actually going to line Wallace or Kendrick up at FB.
With that said, I do think Joker may look at the possibility of taking a page out of Nick Saban's book by using a DT or an OG as a lead blocker in certain situations.
