Keys to the game: UK vs. Auburn

Here is an article by the Kentucky Kernel that breaks down the UK-Auburn game by position. The Kernel gives UK advantages at running back and linebacker positions. I also feel UK's offensive line is better than Auburn's as well. Based on the reports we have linked through other posts this week, Auburn's coaching staff is concerned about depth on the defense and special teams. In looking at Auburn, I think they may be a little over-hyped due to their schedule. Don't count out the Cats, this team needs a win badly. My hope is that Auburn takes UK lightly knowing the Cats don't have Mike Hartline and the Big Blue can steal a win on the road.

Below are the keys to the game for UK:
  1. Quarterback- Whether it's Morgan Newton or Will Fidler, UK needs one of the two guys or both to play within themselves and not do too much. Morgan Newton has the ability to make plays with his feet, but needs to hold on the to the ball. Will Fidler has a big arm and can't afford to throw interceptions. Rich Brooks needs one of these guys to step in and manage the game.

  2. Offensive Line- The offensive line must show the new quarterbacks they are going to give them good protection and allow them to stand in the pocket to make throws. UK's offensive line can't afford more penalties. This offensive line has too many veterans to jump offsides or get called for snap infractions. Finally, this unit must establish the running game to set the tone for the entire game. UK knows this is one of their strength's, but so does the rest of the SEC.

  3. Running Game- It's time for Derrick Locke to have a 100-yard rushing game. Locke has been a work horse and will have to be a major factor for UK to pull off the upset. Alfonso Smith will receive some carries, but his thumb could be a factor since he will be wearing a splint. Look for the "Turtle", Moncell Allen, to receive some carries and be a factor in short yardage situations. The running backs must hold on to the football. UK will not win if they don't win the turnover battle.

  4. Secondary- Last week Martavious Neloms, Randall Burden and Cartier Rice showed the UK secondary was vulnerable. The Cats could receive a boost if Paul Warford is able to play Saturday. Warford practiced and will be evaluated up until game time. Auburn's offense runs a lot of misdirection plays, so the UK secondary must be quick on their reads or they will get burned and it will make for a long day.

  5. Special Teams- Simply put, UK must cover kick-off's better. Lones Sieber doesn't have the leg to send the ball into the end zone. This facet of the game has been a concern for Rich Brooks since training camp, but there is no excuse for poor tackling. Sieber has been on fire kicking field goals this season and maybe he can kick one at the end to win for UK.
