2009 Season in Review

Larry Vaught has put together a nice recap of the 2009 UK Football Season. Click on the link or title to see Larry's article. Here are a couple:
  • UK has beat Louisville for three consecutive years.
  • UK will play in it's fourth consecutive bowl game.
  • UK extended their non conference winning streak to 18 games (currently the Nations longest)
  • UK won three times on the road in the SEC (Vanderbilt, Auburn and Georgia) for the first time since 1977.
  • UK defeated Auburn for the first time in 43 years.
  • UK defeated Georgia in Athens for the first time in 32 years.
  • UK fans broke the season average attendance record at 69, 594
  • UK was the first team to knock out Tim Tebow

Which accomplishment are you most proud of as a UK fan? In my opinion, the three SEC road wins have to be at the top. Anyone concerned about the direction of the UK football program needs to remember the road wins this season. The road wins are even more impressive when you consider UK was starting a true freshman at quarterback.

  1. Why delude yourself with the pathetic accomplishments you listed? We should have gone undefeated and be playing in the SEC Championship. When will UK football fans quit settling for seven and eight win seasons and trips to bowl games and demand that we fire Brooks, Joker, and Barnhart and get an AD, head coach, and OC that will get us back to the National Championship game? Wait. You were talking about football? Oh, never mind. It is all progress. Hopefully, we will continue winning and move to winning 8 or 9 games a season. Sorry again. I got football and basketball confused, like a lot of UK fans have recently.

  2. Catholic Dad-

I don't think these accomplishments are pathetic. UK should have broken most of them a long time ago. However, they didn't and I choose to find the positives. I tend to look at things as "the glass is half full" instead of "half empty". UK could have easily won 10 games this season if the team doesn't turnover the ball. Just as easy as UK could have won 10 games, the Cats could have only won 5 or 6 too. I still feel that UK's best football days are ahead. The next two years should be big.

  3. Aaron, I should have prefaced my comment with SARCASM ALERT. I am tired of UK fans nitpicking the coaching or the play calling or the bowl games or whatever, rather than realizing that UK football has improved over the last four years. If there were no improvement beyond this (i.e. 7 or 8 wins a season), I would rather have that than 4 or 5 wins a season, as we have averaged over the last 50 years. The expectations of UK basketball do not apply to UK football because we do not have a winning tradition in football. I hope that these four years move the program forward to where we can legitimately expect to win 8 or 9 or 10 or more games a year. Looking back at the season and saying we should have won 10 games is easy. At the beginning of the season, if someone told me we would win 7 games for the fourth year in a row with this offense and the loss of Jarmon, I would have thought that overly optimistic. The next two years are big. Start beating Mississippi State on a regular basis, not alternating wins and losses and finally beating Steve Spurrier will give us a good measure of progress. Still, 7 or 8 wins is a lot better than 4 or 5, regardless of whether we beat Tennessee or Steve Spurrier.

  4. I think UK fans want to be passionate about football, but until the last couple of years there hasn't been reason for excitement. Before the season I picked UK to have eight wins (withhout Jarmon). The Cats still had a shot, but just missed out. Most people felt the Cats would win 6 games at best. Next year is our year! Mark it down now.
