Q & A with Randy Sanders

Larry Vaught has a nice Q & A with Randy Sanders which should answer some questions many fans have had. In my opinion, Coach Sanders has done a tremendous job since arriving at UK. If he is given the keys to the offense (which he should), UK will be just fine. Also, Sanders talks about his relationship with Tee Martin and what the new coach brings to the program.

  1. Interesting interview with Randy Sanders. I think every UK football fan needs to realize that the most important decision facing UK's coaching staff in the next year will be the starting QB. This will unfold in April. This decision has direct implications, not only for 2010, but for the next 3-4 seasons. Randy Sanders has the right experience and track record to handle this.

This is a time for UK's coaching staff to be bold. A conservative decision will have appeal because they are moving beyond Rich Brooks' tenure and will be tempted to apply what they learned from Brooks as a mentor. Brooks was a conservative coach.

But here's the thing. I have been a fan of Hartline when almost no one else has been. Hartline is a better player than most UK fans appreciate, although he has certain athletic limitations that the two younger QBs don't have. If Joker picks Hartline, it can't be because he is a senior. I like to respect seniority, but this case is an important exception. It would have to happen strictly because Hartline outplays the other two outright in April and August. No other reason.

And if Joker picks Newton, it can't be because Newton started eight games in 2009. The fact is, if Hartline had not gotten hurt in Columbia, then Newton would have redshirted last fall. Newton has a lot of promise, but he has not yet shown he can throw accurately enough to execute the passing game in this offense. So if Joker names Newton as his starter, then it has to be because Newton executes the passing game better than Hartline and Mossakowski in April and August.

If Newton or Mossakowski wins this competition and earns the starting job in September, the overwhelming likelihood will be that UK's starting QB is set for the next three or four seasons, barring injury. And if it's Mossakowski, then Newton will probably consider transfering. That's just the reality.

This is a huge decision for the future of UK's football program and Joker's coaching career. I believe it is a good thing that Randy Sanders is there to help Joker make it. We will see if Tee Martin helps, but I don't see how he can hurt.

  2. Your right, this is a huge decision. I think Hartline will be the quarterback becuase of his decision making ability. I think Hartline manages the games better than the two under classmen. Hartline was playing a great game at SC when he got injured. I think he would have played well the rest of the season. He went against two really stiff defenses up to that point in Bama and Florida.

Also, if Hartline is the starter, it likely buys the staff more time with both Newton and Mossakowski.

I have said on this blog before, either Newton or Mossakowski COULD transfer as neither will want to be a back up.

  4. 3, I suppose we can see why you choose to remain anonymous.

Internet boards are a nice way for fans to share an opportunity to develop perspectives and dialogs above and beyond what one reads in the regional newspapers or hears on the radio call-in shows. In reality, we are indebted to Aaron and others like him for providing these opportunities.

The problem is that any character can sit at a computer keyboard and anonymously type insults. So internet boards can sometimes become a format for angry souls to vent misdirected hostilities without having to take any responsibility for what they do to others.

Some websites deal with this through rules and policies that govern posting. Some are willing to offer reasonable discussion and debate, even with posters who initially don't understand the merits of common courtesy. Others simply blacklist posters whose opinions differ with those of their ownerships and staffs. One can encounter all of these approaches among the various UK fan websites. It isn't as one-size-fits-all kind of thing.

The reality is that Aaron is doing the best job on the internet right now in giving UK football fans objective information and a forum for discussing it. Aaron's material is informative, interesting, and presented courteously. I hope everyone will give Aaron an appropriate level of respect and gratitude for his excellent work.

If anyone wants to discuss UK's football program in a civil, collegial, substantive way on our Visual Boxscore website, we will be glad to have you. Occasionally, we even get a visit from our friend Aaron.
