Tim McAdoo (OL) could end up as a greyshirt or not on campus based on reports of grade issues. Some feel that is why Tennessee never offered him a scholarship. Many people felt McAdoo wouldn’t sign with UK as he was considered a "soft commit" until he inked with the Cats. Also, many people were blown away when the staff announced he would start out on the Offensive Line. McAdoo is a beast and will be tough to move at 300 lbs. Many people are comparing him to Larry Warford already. You can't teach size, but he will need to learn technique. He is likely headed for a redshirt season if he makes it on campus.
Aaron, your post does a nice job of summarizing the many rumors that currently surround McAdoo and his status in UK's 2010 recruiting class. Let's consider each of these more closely.
ReplyDeleteFirst, McAdoo is one of a small handful of recent UK signees who haven't yet nailed down their D-1 academic eligibility. McAdoo's academic status will not be known until June or July. Tim is currently a senior at Oakland HS in Murfreesboro. He has practically a full semester of classwork left to complete before his class graduates in May. I believe the issues involve both core classes and the entrance exam. If Tim passes all of his spring classes and retakes the entrance exam successfully, he might be able to enroll at UK next August. If he doesn't make it, then he could grayshirt or possibly attend a prep school or a JUCO. All of this remains to be seen, but Tim isn't the only UK signee who hasn't yet done enough to get cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Most of the kids in that category will make it to Lexington. We will see whether Tim makes it. This largely boils down to Tim focusing on the task at hand and realizing that his future depends on getting the work done.
I agree with you that the academic issues are one reason Tennessee did not offer him a scholarship. Athletically, Tim is good enough to play football for most SEC schools.
Tim is projectible as a DT, OG, or C. He could play any of those three positions at the D-1 level without difficulty. I'm not sure I would compare Tim to Larry Warford yet, but Tim certainly has the athletic tools to excel at the next level.
The thing is, UK's recruiting class includes a number of prospects who are projectible at more than one position. Donte Rumph and Brice Laughlin may get quick looks at several positions. But I believe Donte and Brice will get slotted at DT fairly quickly, and possibly work their way into UK's 2010 DT picture.
And Joker expects to sign two more high-upside DT prospects in 2011. (Clint Tucker may turn out to be one of those.)
Now, the fact is that UK's staff signed a lot of excellent DL prospects last month, but they missed on all of their primary OL targets (Eric Mack, Skyler Schofner, Dillon Bonnell, Tate Nichols, Kenarious Gates, Morgan Bailey, OC Brown). So if Donte Rumph makes it into school as expected, then Joker can afford to move McAdoo to the OL to cover that roster need. But that doesn't necessarily mean McAdoo will end up on UK's OL. Several of the underlying issues have not yet played out.
In the bigger picture, though, it has been a long time since UK signed a class with so many high-upside DL prospects.
Messenger- I agree with you. UK brought in a very good class. Most don't realize.
ReplyDeleteLaughlin told me he wanted to play strong side end, but said the staff would likely play him at DT.
I think it's too early to determine the Rumph situation. They have to get him on campus and work him out. I think he is on the DL for sure.
Dillon Bonnell? Did you mean Dylan Bostic? If so, UK never offered him. I spoke to his coach.
Aaron, UK's staff offered Colorado OT prospect Dillon Bonnell a scholarship last summer. Bonnell was on UK's so-called "A-list". He eventually signed with Stanford.
ReplyDeleteThe staff missed on all of the OL prospects I mentioned in my post above. All were offered UK scholarships but chose to play elsewhere. However, I should hasten to add that Teven Eatmon is a legitimate D-1 OT prospect. The only knocks on Eatmon are that he played for a small program at Wynford HS in Ohio's lowest competition classification, and that he played DE and TE in HS. Eatmon will need his redshirt year to get stronger and adjust to a new position, but I think he has a chance to become a starting OT at UK in the years ahead.
In the meantime, if they contemplate moving McAdoo to the OL, that decision would be on the table because Eatmon was the only OL prospect they signed in 2010. But I'm not yet completely convinced McAdoo will play on the OL when the rubber hits the road. In the end, this could depend on a number of other issues that have not yet playerd out.
Tim is very lazy. IMO he is a waste. I hate to see kids with talent who don't work. It is a shame.
ReplyDeleteIt is a mistake to brand a 17 year old kid as 'lazy' or a 'waste'. This same thing was said about Jamaal Mashburn coming out of high school in the early 1990s. We never know what is in a kid's heart until he is challenged.
ReplyDeleteMcAdoo may or may not make it as an SEC player, but Joker would not have signed him if he didn't believe McAdoo has SEC-level talent and upside.
In the end, you have to have 85 players on your roster in order to find 22 who can start for your team and make it successful on the field. Nobody ever knows for sure which 22 they will be.
If he chooses to work hard, he could become a Pouncey
